Travel Tuesday: Jungfrau Marathon, Switzerland

I find it hard to believe that it has been almost 3 years since my crazy husband ran the Jungfrau Marathon - an entirely uphill marathon, up a Swiss Alp, often with a 10% grade, that ends on a glacier.

When signing up for this marathon the organizers suggest that you add 1.5 hours to your best marathon time, and assume that will be your time for Jungfrau. If that calculated time is over 6 hours, they suggest you not enter. Anyone who takes longer than 6 hours to finish the race does not receive a race shirt or finisher medal.

Dan finished in the top third for all of the men in 2011's race, and I was obviously so proud of him.

Jungfrau is in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, and is worth the visit if you're into hiking, skiing, and other outdoorsy activities. It's picturesque as can be, and was in fact the area that Tolkien used (Lauterbrunnen specifically) as inspiration when writing about Rivendell in "Lord of the Rings."

We stayed in Wengen for the race, and since Dan's legs weren't complete lead the day after, we went for a hike to explore the Jungfrau at a slower pace. On the way home we stopped in Lauterbrunnen for a few hours to check out some waterfalls, have a beer, and take a lot of pictures.

If you ever the chance to participate in the Jungfrau Marathon, I say go for it, as it's been labelled as one of the most beautiful race courses in the world. It's not so bad to participate as a spectator either.

This year's race will take place in about 2 weeks, and it's hard for me to believe how far we've come since that race. We've made friends, we've lost friends, we've had highs and lows, we've made a little human, we've grown as individuals and as a couple. I hope to be able to bring Oswin to Wengen and Jungfrau sometime in the near future, to take the cogwheel train to Kleine-Scheidegg, to pretend we're walking in a chapter of "Lord of the Rings," to show her somewhere that showed us how strong we really are, well, that would be amazing.

Happy travels friends, and if you're running this year, Hop Schweiz!

One last note on Jungfrau...

Under the category of "I can't make this merde up" falls this little gem found in the vending machine at the Wengen train station. Swiss Cannabis Ice Tea, yours for only 2,50 CHF.

Which can be conviently located in the very same vending machine as the "maybe baby" pregnancy tests for 15,00 CHF. One stop shopping for all of your travel needs!

(Sidenote: Swiss Cannabis Ice Tea can also be found at the COOP at the Augustins stop in Carouge, Geneva. Gasp.)

Wanderlust week continues into week 2 folks as Doc and I leave for our Italian Road Trip today. I'm so excited! We're spending tonight in Riomaggiore in Cinque Terre and then heading to Pisa on Sunday. We'll be in Pisa for a few days for Doc for a work thing, so I have some day trips planned, including one back to Cinque Terre, possibly to Lucca, and then to a third yet undetermined location. I'm also hoping that Doc and I can spend a night in Florence because I want to hit up the San Lorenzo street market and have truffle gnocchi at my faovrite restaurant. I should have internet for a good portion of the trip, so I'm planning to stay connected to the blog while we're away, even if it's just to share a few quick pictures from the day.

Duggans, OUT!

Hiking in the Jungfrau.

The next day, everyone was still alive - yippee! So, we ordered a drink and took to the trails...

We hiked up to Allemande at 1500 m, and stopped for a drink, frites and a bathroom break. We wanted to keep going higher up the mountain, but the weather started to change and it was getting late, so we started heading back down to Wengen so as to not get caught in a downpour. (We did however get caught in a downpour, but we were on the streets of Wengen by then, so we didn't really care.) Another time we'll hike the whole way up, but the day after a marathon I'm just happy that we got out on the mountain a little bit...

The next morning it was time to say good-bye to what I consider to be one of the two most beautiful places I've ever seen in my life (with the other being Cinque Terre, which I'll get to see demain (!!!)...more on that soon!), but with a friend coming out to see us very soon who is into outdoorsy type stuff, I have a feeling we'll be heading back to this UNESCO protected site sooner rather than later...

In the meantime however, we hopped back on our little cogwheel train for the 30 or 40 minute train ride down to Lauterbrunnen where our friends had parked their car...

...and spent a few hours in Lauterbrunnen to see the sights before heading home. Sights like this sweet waterfall...

And to cool off with a tasty beverage and more frites...

I know, we're so incredibly predictable.

Au revoir Jungfrau, Wengen, Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen, we will meet again soon.

Will run for beer, cheese and brats: Part Trois

Following the Jungfrau Marathon, there were of course festivities! Once we got a beer and some brats/frites in Doc's tummy, he was good to go to get festive with his fellow marathoners...

Ricollllllaaaaa...

Schweiz colorguard?

Post-race, we hopped back on the cogwheel train and headed back down to Wengen...

After everyone in the house had showered and recovered a bit from the day (because hey, it's damn hard work being a supporter - I came home with a cowbell ringing injury myself!), we lit a party bomb, and we feasted.

Some of us feasted more than others. And aren't good at sharing.

"Leave me alone I'm starving!"

Demain: Hiking in the Jungfrau/Wengen area...
